Great Day of Fishing!

Yesterday was a great way to end 2011. My buddy TJ and I started it off by meeting at his house around 4:15am. We then headed off to Shands Pier on the St. John’s River, just outside of Green Cove Springs. I’ll have to admit, it started off pretty slow and didn’t change much through the morning. Around 7:45am, I caught a very nice 15″ striped bass. It hit like a ton of bricks and felt like a much bigger fish. It was quite exciting, especially since I was using the same shrimp tail I had put on the hook almost two hours earlier. After I got it off the hook, I had a bigger hit immediately upon getting a shrimp tail back in the water. However, as I fought to get the fish to the surface, my line gave way. I lost my hook and weight in that battle! TJ wasn’t as lucky. No hits for him on the day, but we had a good time.

We decided to head back out in the evening and figured we would give Knights Marina a try for the evening, since neither one of us had fished there before. The night started of a bit slow. At one point, my son had a nibble, which turned out to be nothing. I had a really good set of hits on my line, but was not able to land whatever I had on it for a few seconds. The best fish of the night is the one you see to the right. TJ landed a 26″ blue catfish! He caught it using chicken liver and was kind of caught off-guard. He was sitting in his chair and caught his pole as it was coming up off of the pier. Then, the fight was on! It was a catch that had my son pretty excited the rest of the night! Below are some of the other pictures we had on the night. Not a bad end to 2011!

Going Fishing!

Off to bed. I have to get up in three short hours to hit the pier! Stopping by Wal-Mart for bait and the gas station for coffee!

Why I Like Stamps.com – A Short Review

I was a little leery about signing up for service with Stamps.com. I had used the service in the past, but the monthly fee just didn’t seem worth it back then. Of course, we were closer to family then, so mailing items for the holidays and such didn’t happen much. Additionally, the post office was just down the street. If we needed stamps or to mail packages, we just went there to take care of business. Now, 11 years later, I can see at least a little value in my monthly service fee.

Although I know it sounds ridiculous to pay a $15.99 fee for the service, as I felt the same way, there really is a bit of comfort knowing that I can get my mail ready to go any time of the day, any day of the year, and not have to drive 20 minutes to the post office. Our closest post office is a bit of a drive, so I do save a little gas money from making trips just for stamps. Now, the drawback for us? We live in an area where rural route carriers deliver our mail. A little strange, since we’re in the city, but that’s how they operate here. Why is that an issue? I still have to take my parcels to the post office to mail them. However, Stamps.com makes that trip a breeze! My trips to the post office take seconds to minutes, depending on the lines and how many packages I am mailing. Since the postage is already on the package, all they have to do is scan it.

With my trial package, I received $5 in free postage, a sampling of their labels, and a digital scale to weigh my packages, up to five pounds. Have you ever had a heavy card, think letter, or small package that you have just added postage to until you thought it was enough? I have done it before, and those days are over! The scale plugs into my computer and allows the software to calculate just the right amount of postage. You also get four $10 coupons for postage to use over your first four months with the service, although I believe you have up to a year to redeem them, but can only do so once a month. And, when you run out of labels, you can just print your postage straight on the envelope! So, if you don’t feel like you want to purchase any of their other labels, you have that option. I actually bought some national parks, wildlife, wild flower, and Christmas stamps to use and love them! Additionally, you do get discounts for printing postage online. So, the more you ship, the more money you will save!

So, if you’re a little hesitant about Stamps.com, as I was, why not at least give them a try? There is no obligation to stay past the first month, unless you want the free $40 in postage. I’ve seen the scales on ebay for sale, so there is a chance you can get a little money from that if you don’t like it. If you want to try it, you can enter C-9RK6-7XG during registration and receive the free digital scale, $5 of postage for your trial, and an additional $40 to use during your membership. It is simple and convenient to use!

Recent Computer Upgrades

Back in 2007, I upgraded my system. My system, up until recently, had the following specs:

Motherboard: EVGA 780i SLI
Processor: Intel Q6600
Memory: 4GB GSKILL
Video: 2 x XFX GeForce 8800GT XXX Alpha Dog
HDD: 320GB Western Digital SATA II

I had a friend who has had a rough year and had recently upgraded my video card. With his birthday coming up, I wanted to help him out. So, I upgraded my system to the following specs and sent him the motherboard, processor, and memory. My system now has the following specs:

Motherboard: ASUS P8P67
Processor: Intel i5-2500K
Memory: 8GB GSKILL
Video: EVGA GeForce GTX 580
HDD: 120GB Kingston HyperX SDD SATA III (320GB Western Digital for data)

I have to say, I am VERY pleased with the performance of this system! I certainly didn’t need to upgrade the motherboard, processor, and memory, as they were still running at stock speeds. However, I couldn’t help but provide some support to a friend in need and pay it forward. Overall boot time of my system from power on to loaded into Windows 7, 42 seconds.

One quirk I did have with the new ASUS board was the inability to wake from sleep. I would press the button or click the mouse and the tower would power up, but I had no USB power and no picture on my monitors. I updated my BIOS from 0105 to the current 2005, as well as disabling the power management for my network controller in the device manager. I’m not sure if it was one or both of these factors, but my system now returns from sleep just fine!

What happened Netflix?

You cannot help but sit back and wonder what discussions took place leading up to the subscription change at Netflix on July 12. I really wish I could have been a fly on the wall in some of them. After all, they have seen tremendous growth and even provide this statement on their website: “With more than 25 million members in the United States and Canada, Netflix, Inc. is the world’s leading Internet subscription service for enjoying movies and TV shows.” So, what happened?

The stock price of Netflix would lead one to believe that the company is doing excellent. In fact, their 2010 net profit was 7.44% in a time when many companies are losing money faster than they can earn it. The stock price even peaked at $304.79 the morning after the subscription announcement. Today, August 8, Netflix closed at $226.64, or $78.15 below where they were just after announcing the subscription change.

I’m not sure who had the grand idea of completely revamping their service, but it appears I am not the only one who jumped ship when the announcement came. I certainly enjoyed the ability to watch streaming movies and television shows over my Wii or blu-ray player, but not enough to pay a separate charge for it. I really enjoyed renting movies and having the next one arrive automatically. However, when you increase the subscription fee by 60%, it’s not that great of a service. So, my family will now use Blockbuster’s online service for our movie needs. Thanks, Netflix, for saving us a few more dollars each month!

Is PayPal Violating United States Law?

Today, I was notified that a PayPal purchase I had made was “refunded per my request.” Interesting, I thought, since I had not requested a refund. I logged into my PayPal account to find that PayPal had flagged my account for a maintenance review and had put a hold on the transaction. At this point, I have no clue if that transaction will go through. I have done the review process before, but never in conjunction with trying to make a transaction. Anyhow, I was asked to provide a copy of identification to prove who I am. One form of identification PayPal will accept is none other than a copied military identification card.

Several years ago, while stationed in Japan, I was informed that copying a military identification card is against the law. I didn’t believe it, but did a search and found it to be true. According to United States Code, Title 18, Section 701:

Whoever manufactures, sells, or possesses any badge, identification card, or other insignia, of the design prescribed by the head of any department or agency of the United States for use by any officer or employee thereof, or any colorable imitation thereof, or photographs, prints, or in any other manner makes or executes any engraving, photograph, print, or impression in the likeness of any such badge, identification card, or other insignia, or any colorable imitation thereof, except as authorized under regulations made pursuant to law, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than six months, or both.
Source: United States Code, Title 18, Section 701

Therefore, not only is PayPal violating the United States Code if they accept any copy of a military member’s identification card, the military member is also in violation of the law. Words of advice: Paypal, stop allowing the submission of military identification; military members: DON’T provide a copy of your identification!

Latest Verizon Update for Thunderbolt

I recently had an update to my Thunderbolt that I presumed would disable my mobile hotspot feature. Instead, I still had my mobile hotspot, but was now plagued by constant shutdowns on my phone. Hopeful that Verizon would be on top of their game, I checked for an update this morning. Sure enough, a 75 MB update was available. So far, so good. The few things I have noticed thus far: the 3G icon is HUGE, Verizon Mobile is finally on the Thunderbolt, and the loading screen is different. I haven’t checked my hotspot feature yet, but will soon enough. Until that last update, my phone was running well. Let’s hope it is now as smooth as before!

Denon AVR-791

It has been two months since my JVC RX-ES1 burnt out on me and I was forced to find a replacement for the home theater. I will have to say, the Denon AVR-791 is a great piece of equipment. The price on it was a bit higher than I wanted to pay, but the setup was a breeze, it is easy to operate, and it puts out great sound with our Yamaha speakers. I haven’t had a chance to set up the dual zones yet, but hope to in the near future. My goal is to put some outdoor speakers on the patio so we can listen to music while we are outside.

Thank You Motel 6, But…

I received an email back from guest relations at Motel 6. I am thankful that they are giving us a free night at any Motel 6 in the United States. I think I am happier they say they will investigate our comments. We will see what happens. I find it hard to believe I would be the first to complain about the Murfreesboro, TN Motel 6. Some of the reviews are three to four years old and it is still a dump! Time will tell.

Seriously, Motel 6?

We traveled to Kansas from Florida and made our mid-point stop at Murfreesboro, TN and stayed at Motel 6 due to their “pets stay free” policy. I have to tell you, it was THE worst Motel 6 I have ever stepped foot in. Our carpet was stained, the room smelled musty, and there was barely room for the two beds crammed inside. Does Motel 6 even pay attention to what people are saying about their hotels? I looked up reviews and found this site . I can’t believe all of the bad reviews, some three years old! Wow. I’m working on changing our reservations. I’m not too thrilled about putting the kids or the pets through that experience again. I should have taken pictures. The room was FILTHY!
